Thrill seekers love nothing better than the adrenalin rush received when experiencing the high speed, twisting, turning, stomach churning feeling that thrill rides offer. Many of the UK's theme parks compete to have the biggest and the best when it comes to dramatic rides, so where to go to find these rides? Here we take a look at some of the theme parks who boast they have the best white knuckle rides on offer!
Alton Towers Staffordshire
Alton Towers is one of the UK's best known and loved theme parks offering a range of rides and attractions for all the family. Many thrill seekers choose to visit this park as it has some of the best "scare the pants off you" rides on offer.
Nemesis is one of the most popular of the white knuckle rides at Alton Towers and was the first inverted roller coaster to open in Europe. If twisting and turning while racing along upside down at 50mph while feeling the G force is your thing then prepare to be thrilled by Nemesis. Oblivion is a vertical drop ride that is not for the faint hearted as visitors who dare to look down will know. Prepare for the 4.5 G force as you career down into the darkness at high speed. Will it stop in time? This is the fear of the ride that was the first vertical drop experience in the world.
The Smiler opened in 2013 and careers along looping and twisting at speeds up to 55mph while in parts dropping a jaw dropping thirty metres! Thrill seekers will certainly smile when experiencing this awesome ride! Alton Towers has many more great rides and attractions to excite all its visitors including the Sonic Spinball Ride, Marauders Mayhem and Nemesis Sub Terror that is not a great ride for those of us who are afraid of the dark.
Blackpool Pleasure Beach Lancashire
The ultimate roller coaster ride for Blackpool visitors to experience is The Big One as my goodness it is what it says on the tin absolutely massive! The Big One has a top height of 213 feet with a massive 205 feet drop that from the ground amazes onlookers as it surely looks like it wont stay on the track as it hurtles down reaching speeds of up to 74mph.
Another thrillng ride that was built many years before The Big One but never ceases to excite its riders is The Grand National. Two roller coasters battle it out travelling side by side to see which one will win the race. The hill climb at the beginning of the ride is slow lulling us into a false sense of security but once the roller coater hits the brow of the hill all hell is let loose as it careers downward alongside its competitor. This is definitely a ride not to be missed when visiting Blackpool Pleasure Beach!
Thorpe Park in Surrey has one of the scariest rides out there in our opinion which is The Swarm. Wow what a ride this is! Those of us brave enough can choose to travel backwards on this awesome ride experiencing a 127 foot drop falling into the unknown. The ride hurtles along encountering near misses as it goes that will make you scream in fright. Another ride not for the faint hearted!
Saw the Ride is another exhillarating ride at Thorpe Park as it is based on the horror movie Saw that in itself was very frightening and blood thirsty to watch. The ride speeds along, twists and drops as it heads for spiralling steel blades, while the beginning of the ride takes you through a dark scary house, just like the one in the film, in order to build up the tension before you whizz off to be thrilled and frightened all in one go! Nemesis Inferno is superb for those who dont mind being tipped upside down, twisted and spun while hurtling down into a fiery pit will love this ride. Another one that isn't good for the scaredy cats among us.
Flamingo Land is located in North Yorkshire and offers some great white knuckle rides for those of us looking for them. Cliff Hanger is a vertical drop ride that offers multiple launch and drop experiences plus is one of the tallest vertical drop rides in Europe. The Flip Flop ride is another thrill seekers dream as it swings and spins from side to side over an open lake. Riders experience a 5G force and reaches heights of up to 78 feet so not for sufferers of vertigo!
Kumali is another sensational ride that is named after the leading lion of Flamingo Land. Spins, drops, G force plus an 87 foot tall loop all while moving over an open lake make it one of the scariest rides out there, while last but not least visitors must not miss Mumbo Jumbo the worlds steepest climb roller coaster with its 112 degrees vertical drop.
Drayton Manor Staffordshire
Drayton Manor has a number of great white knuckle rides to thrill visitors including The Apocalypse that features a fantastic 54 metre drop tower to rattle the bones of anyone who rides it. Or why not experience Pandemonium, the double gondola swing, a ride that literally turns the world on its head!
Visitors to Drayton Manor who dont mind getting wet can take a ride on Stormforce 10 where your boat careers backwards down a 9 metre drop from an 180 degree platform, while Shockwave sees riders get the ultimate thrill on Europes only stand up rollercoaster. With a 120 foot height and an 80 foot drop its an awesome experience in anyones book!
Lightwater Valley North Yorkshire
Lightwater Valley offers a number of thrilling rides to excite those of us who love to be frightened. Take a ride on The Black Pearl and take in the view if you can open your eyes long enough. This ride rotates 360 degrees while ascending to 85 feet in the air, a real stomach churner of a ride.
The Ultimate is the longest roller coaster in Europe and rises to the grand height of 107 feet. Its a tale of two rides here as the first part makes riders feel comfortable before the second half launches into the roller coaster ride of a lifetime with plunges, twists and turns that are second to none.
Trauma Tower will drop you down quickly when you least expect it, while The Twister, a spinning roller coaster gives riders the impression that at any moment they may career off at the next spin into the passing treetops! Lightwater Valley has ten thrill rides in all making it a great place for thrill seekers to spens a day out.
Flambards Theme Park Cornwall
Flambards may not be the most famous theme park in the UK but it none the less offers a great family day out as well as a great experience for the thrill seekers among us. The Hornet roller coaster is an awesome ride that reaches speeds of up to thirty miles an hour while turning quickly to descend the next high bank.
Another great ride featured at Flambards is Skyraker 001 where riders are spun all the way to the top of the tower then dropped at break neck speed. That isn't the end of it though as riders go up again to be dropped again. The tension is palpable and the screams are ear piercing as riders experience the thrill of this awesome ride.
Flambards is a great place for families too offering all kinds of attractions to create great memories of a superb day out.
